His father owned the New York Post, and he was raised in New York City.

He attended Aspen Country Day School in Aspen, Colorado, Trinity School in New York City, and Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, for his elementary and senior education.

He earned a philosophy bachelor's degree from Princeton University in 1994. He studied philosophy at Princeton alongside Béatrice Longuenesse and Alan Hajek.
