Warren, the youngest of five sons, spent his early years in River Forest, Illinois, before the family relocated to San Diego, California. He graduated from La Jolla High School in 1981, eventually choosing to set aside college to pursue a career in music. His passion for guitar began at a young age, receiving his first instrument from his mother. However, dissatisfaction with its quality led him to emulate his idol, Pete Townshend, by smashing it. Consequently, he took a break from playing until he could afford a new guitar – his second being an electric Cimar Les Paul copy, which marked the beginning of his musical journey.
In San Diego, Warren gained recognition, winning “Best New Guitar Player in San Diego” at Guitar Trader in his first year of competition. Subsequently, he joined the Los Angeles band Mickey Ratt, later known as Ratt, marking the start of his global success. Ratt is acknowledged as a pioneer of glam metal alongside bands such as Mötley Crüe, Quiet Riot, and Bon Jovi. DeMartini’s addition to the band proved to be transformative, contributing to the creation of some of Ratt’s signature songs, including “Round and Round” in 1984.
DeMartini’s tenure with Ratt lasted until their disbandment in 1992, during which they released five studio albums. Their debut album, “Out of the Cellar” in 1984, achieved a triple-platinum status and produced hits such as “Round and Round” and “Wanted Man.” The band reunited twice, with DeMartini remaining part of the lineup. The first reunion saw the release of two more albums, however, both were met with poor critical and commercial reception. Their final album, “Infestation,” was released in 2010, three years after their second reunion.
Parallel to his time with Ratt, Warren briefly collaborated with another popular glam metal band, Dokken, and went on tour with Whitesnake in 1994. DeMartini also released an EP in 1995 and a studio album, “Crazy Enough To Sing To You in 1996.” In 2003, he was set to join the heavy metal band Dio but withdrew due to creative differences with the band’s founder Ronnie James Dio.
Throughout his career, DeMartini has expressed admiration for numerous musicians, citing influences such as Jimi Hendrix, Pete Townshend, Joe Perry, Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, Eddie Van Halen, and Randy Rhoads.
In his personal life, DeMartini is married to Kathy Naples, with whom he has a son, Wyatt. He is nicknamed Torch.
